SPOTLIGHT ON... Linowski: They should avoid traditional exfoliants. I put these clients on mild, creamy-textured cleansers and alcohol-free toners from our vendors sensitive lines. We also refer many clients to a holistic nutritionist, who can help pinpoint the internal and environmental reactions triggering their problem. Edward: I tell clients to get a soft, high-quality pillowcase, as well as all-cotton sheets and towels. Common redness triggers include spicy food, red wine, caffeine, vigorous exercise and hot water. A lot of people overuse their electric cleansing brushes, which can over-exfoliate skin, and thereby stimulate redness. Once a week is enough, I tell the rosacea-prone. Makeup can also exacerbate the problem, so I recommend mineral makeup, which is naturally antibacterial and doesnt really expire. These clients should only exfoliate using acid-based, leave-on masks. These will help unhinge those rosacea-causing mites that live within our cells. SPF is also crucial, as sun exposure intensies rosacea. What are the greatest challenges to dealing with rosacea-prone clients? Linowski: Educating them. Many will selfdiagnose their problem without arming themselves with the proper knowledge. People often come to me thinking they have acne, when its really inammation, and theyve worsened the condition by using all the wrong products. Edward: For legal reasons, estheticians arent allowed to diagnose rosacea, as its a medical conditiona physicians area of expertise. So, we cant tell them they have roscaea; we can only make helpful suggestions. Deresh: I try to respect the medical ofce, so I generally direct rosacea-prone clients toward a dermatologist. Its a nice way to offer them the full extent of information. After all, medical treatment is an option, and they should look into all of their options.
