MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP BASIC INSTINCTS Image is everything, right? So while spas may wish to cultivate a diverse staff and clientele, the odds may be against them from the start. "Let's be honest, our industry's image is built on a young, thin, rich, white female," says Peggy Wynne Borgman, president of Preston, Wynne, Inc., owner of Preston Wynne Spa in Saratoga, California, and Wynne Business spa consulting (wynnebusiness.com). "To be more inclusive, we have to start 're-imaging' at every level." Borgman gives an example of a spa she was recently working with that wanted to find stock photography of a multicultural clientele for its marketing materials. "There really wasn't much out there," she laments. The stereotype goes in circles. "Spa guests selfselect; they want to fit into imagery we've put forth, our brand promise. And then that image becomes the employees we attract as well," Borgman says. Consider body size. Many spas are now ordering guest robes to accommodate all sizes, something they may never have done before. "What message are you sending to Paul Meshanko, president and CEO of Legacy Business Cultures, has developed these guidelines that he uses in training companies that are experiencing culture changes: • Be aware of our non-verbal and extraverbal cues. • Develop curiosity for the perspective of others. • Assume that everyone is smart about something. • Become a better listener by shaking our "but." • Look for opportunities to connect with and support others. • Explain why we disagree when we do. • Admit where we need to personally grow, stretch and change. • Learn to be wrong on occasion. • Never hesitate to say we're sorry. • Intentionally engage others in ways that build their self-esteem. • Be respectful of time when making comments. • Smile!
