SPA HOPPING ELMWOOD SPA ( Opened: 1982 Size: 40,000 sq. ft. over 5 floors Facility: 34 treatment rooms; 18 nail stations; water therapy area; hair studio; juice bar; 2 restaurants Staff: 200+ Product lines used/retailed: Guinot, LI'TYA, Seaflora, Swiss l ine, proprietary spa product line The grand dame of Toronto spa culture, the massive Elmwood Spa is housed in a landmark historic building. During my visit on a Saturday I had to wind my way through throngs of men and women in robes, who were enjoying the swimming pool and whirlpools, both co-ed and single sex, and patiently awaiting treatments. The water circuit is complimentary with any massage, facial or body treatment, and otherwise available for a small fee. In addition to the dozens of treatments on the service menu, Elmwood offers a variety of packages and retreats, many of which include a meal in the Terrace Restaurant, where patrons can dine in their robes (and, in nice weather, a terrace outside). The juice bar provides smoothies, wraps and energy bars, and the Thai restaurant serves lunch and dinner to both spa patrons and passersby. In addition to its own line of skincare and bodycare products, Elmwood offers seven signature teas and tisane blends, many of which are also served as a beverage during retreat experiences. With so many features, it was easy to understand what drew the Toronto crowds to Elmwood Spa on a busy weekend. NOVO SPA ( Opened: 2005 Size: 5,000 sq. ft. Facility: 9 treatment rooms; 8 nail stations; men's and women's lounges; locker rooms with sanariums (wet saunas that feature color therapy) Staff: 40 Product lines used/retailed: Éminence Organic Skin Care, Guinot, Swiss line The upscale Yorkville section of Toronto boasts high-end shopping, restaurants and several luxury hotels. The Park Hyatt is home to Stillwater, at 12 years old the first luxury spa in the city, and the nearby Four Seasons has recently relocated to a new building that also features a state-ofthe-art spa. In the midst of these is the accessible Novo Spa, offering an expansive menu of facials performed with highend products, and body treatments provided in a steam and color therapy capsule. But one of the nicest features is the luxurious couple's suite, which includes a small living room, special shower with color therapy and jets, and a private washroom. This modestly sized but sophisticated day spa provides an easy alternative for clients who may not want to navigate the bigger, fancier options in the area. 26 DAYSPA | OCTOBER 2013
