EDITOR'S PAGE Measured Risks I 've never been what you'd call a big risk taker. In the schoolyard, while other kids were happily swinging from the highest jungle gym bar, you could usually find me in the sandbox, building an elaborate castle. In college, I didn't even consider trying to take Physics. To this day, I've never ridden in an airplane with fewer than 100 seats. In short, in the gambling casino of life, I'm a nickel slot girl. This is probably why I'm such an admirer of business owners. You take risks from the moment you sign on the dotted line of that property lease or purchase agreement. Your daily decisions, from who to hire to which product lines to use, come fraught with potential pitfalls. I'm not saying you don't agonize occasionally, but you still go forward, willing to stick out your neck for the potential rewards of building something special. Why do some of us seem more willing to "leap" while others are more likely to play it safe? The answer may be in our DNA, at least with regard to financial risk. According to a new study out of Stanford University, there's a serotonin gene that plays a key role in how we make our financial decisions. This gene, apparently, is commonly found in people who are "worriers" by nature (tell me something I don't know!). For these folks, safety and security ranks extra-high on the priority scale. As a spa professional, you work to minimize both risk and worry Linda Kossoff in clients' lives, by partnering with them to take care of their health Executive Editor and well-being. And this month, our features seem to be a metaphor for the effort to balance that scale between security and risk. In "Building a Better Barrier" (page 52), we discuss the all-important skin barrier, and how you can help bolster its role in protecting clients from the impact of environmental hazards. In "That's a Wrap!" (page 38), we present a tantalizing variety of cozy body wrap treatments you can offer guests to help them feel safe from the oncoming effects of winter. On the "risk" side, you can support clients who dare to bare their delicate décolleté this holiday season by with suggestions on beautifying and caring for this vulnerable area ("Off the Shoulder", page 68). Fortunately, even the biggest worriers among us are capable of overriding our apparent genetic predisposition and learning how to take measured risks. And thank goodness, because risk is really unavoidable anyway. Or as the courageous Helen Keller once put it, "Security is mostly a superstition ... Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." OK, fine. But I'm still not taking Physics. As a spa pro, you work to minimize risk in clients' lives. P.S. Spa owners need pampering too, so enter DAYSPA's Miraval Experience Getaway Contest on facebook.com/DAYSPAmagazine! But hurry—deadline is November 15! 14 DAYSPA | NOVEMBER 2013
