MARKETING SAVVY walk you through the discovery process when beginning the project. This entails the designer extracting and embracing a client's ideas and learning their client's business as if he or she were an employee. Also keep in mind, the design, style, cosmetics, look and feel of your logo should be specific to your business. Good design must be personal, and distinctive from your competition. West-Harrison: When I coach clients on creating their business logo, I first ask them to collect their favorite logos from industries other than spa and salon. We also flip through magazines and take a look at some of the shapes, colors and visual attributes that catch their eye. Koskas: Have a theme or concept in mind. Decide what images you like and avoid overwhelming designs that can bury your logo. For The Lounge Spa, the inspiration for our logo and concept came during a road trip from Los Angeles to Palm Springs. I came across a billboard promoting a lounge-themed radio station with a retro vibe and look. It inspired me to create a similar design concept for my spa—by the end of that two-hour drive, I had decided my spa's theme, concept and mission statement! The Lounge Spa isn't a clinical, sterile environment: the facility includes swanky retro décor and spa services inspired by a classic cocktail menu—and we wanted the logo to be reflective of that. Schoenberg: When choosing the logo, colors and message you're trying to convey, you'll want to consider your spa's overall environment, setting and clientele. Although our business' name is Oasis, we thought the image of an actual oasis was tacky, so when it came to choosing our logo, we didn't opt for the obvious. We consulted with two designers who said, 'Describe what Oasis is about— beyond massages and facials,' and 'What makes you different?' We told them that we consider ourselves an 'affordable luxury.' We provide a respite from the craziness of the everyday urban environment. Hence, we selected a soft, earthy logo.
