EDITOR'S PAGE Personal Best When it comes to making women feel beautiful, spas encounter a special challenge. emember that classic Twilight Zone episode where the conventionally beautiful woman wakes up in a medical facility staffed by "pig people" who consider her horribly disfigured? Despite the campiness with which we now view that episode, it made an important point about the subjective nature of beauty, especially female beauty. It used an outrageous scenario to challenge our society's narrow perceptions of what is beautiful. Fifty years later, the 1960s-era American archetype of beauty—the delicately featured blonde princess illustrated in countless children's storybooks and feature films—now shares the stage with an infinite number of stunning women of all shapes and colors. Yet women are still plagued by the psychological residue, not only from past attitudes, but from the continuing over-representation of old-standard ideals of beauty in our media. Consider findings from the research done by Dove as part of its "The Real Truth About Beauty" campaign: only 4% of women around the world considered themselves beautiful, yet 80% agreed that every woman has something about her that is beautiful but does not see her own beauty. So we still have work to do, and spas are an important part of that work. Linda Kossoff Executive Editor As a spa professional, you're trained to bring out the inherent beauty in your clients, to realize their "personal best", not just on the outside but internally too. The most successful spa owners know this, and make sure that when clients leave their spa, they not only look their best, they feel their best as well. This month, we turn our focus to the numerous ways in which you can bring out each spa guest's singular beauty. For instance, we asked spas to share with us their best brightening facials, and did they ever—we offer you a whopping 18 examples starting on page 84! In our cover story, "Beautiful Tone" (page 38), skincare experts discuss brilliant ways to optimize the beauty in complexions of all ethnicities. And then, because it's February and spring is nipping at our heels, we present our seasonal beauty feature (page 60), researched and written by our own associate editor, Angela Melero. Angela takes us on a whirlwind trip around the world to illustrate the globally influenced styles that will set the backdrop for makeup looks this spring. Finally, we know we have our own "personal best" to strive for, so you'll find throughout this issue the usual healthy lineup of ideas and tips to help you raise the bar for your business this year. Timely information—now, that's our subjective version of beauty. R 12 DAYSPA | FEBRUARY 2014
