BUILDING BLOCKS LEARNING BY EXAMPLE While manuals can be invaluable tools for learning, nothing beats a visual demonstration by a seasoned pro. That's where Aesthetic VideoSource's instructional health and spa DVDs and videos come into play, providing spa owners with the savvy they need to expand their service menu. According to the company, for the equivalent cost of one standard DVD per month, spa and beauty pros can choose one of three subscription options—video streaming, DVDs or pay per view—and get unlimited access to more than 90 fulllength videos in categories such as skin care, body treatments, makeup and waxing, and hair removal. The easy-to-follow videos include expert instructions from Thai Yoga and Master Instructor Dr. Anthony James. Dr. James's Thai Acupressure Massage training videos and DVDs scooped a 2013 Telly Award (presented annually to honor the best local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the best video and film productions). "Not only are we the first company to offer a one-year video streaming subscription with access to such resources online, but we also feel good about going green, reducing our use of plastic, and minimizing our carbon footprint associated with shipping," says Shirley Erickson Gorospe, president of Aesthetic VideoSource. Retail Superstar The spa: La Bella Spa, Merritt Island, Florida The star: Pevonia Power Repair Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream Why it flies off the shelves: "People have been raving about the effects of this cream on their skin," says spa director Joseph D. Mandato. "It hydrates, plumps and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The texture is light yet replenishing, and it absorbs really well. We find that It does a great job with all skin types. Our clients love it!" How it's promoted: "We often showcase the product on JOSEPH D. MANDATO Facebook and Twitter and in email campaigns, especially at times of year such as spring, when we promote it as ideal for 'renewal'," adds Mandato. "We also bundle the product with items that complement the way it works. In addition, every quarter we host the 'La Bella Spa University', an event where we educate our clients on our newest treatments and products. We present the bundles in a more clinical fashion rather than as a mass promotion. That way, the spa guest has a higher appreciation for the product, so rather than being an impulse buy it's something they support long term." 36 DAYSPA | FEBRUARY 2014 Tuning Into Transformation Want to give your clients a more deep and meaningful spa experience? Dreaming Time, a new CD by synthesist Forrest Smithson (forressmithson .com), is a rich, soothing soundtrack aimed at inviting the listener to "follow their dream of a better life and a more positive world." The album is divided into four compositions featuring carefully crafted mixtures of complex, spacey, ambient and cinematic soundscapes that include keyboards, strings, percussion, bass, horns, chimes and other instruments. According to Smithson, "Dreaming is an act of creation. The imagination is a powerful tool for making our lives better. The music serves as a guide, but each individual must add their own thoughts, feelings, passions, hopes and dreams to make the listening experience complete, and to turn it into a life experience for themselves. I deliberately leave space within the recording where listeners can explore their own feelings and be in a position for transformation." And if anyone should know about transformation it's Smithson, who started creating music at the age of four, and has mastered everything from the piano to the trumpet to the guitar, as well as enjoying a stint in a rock 'n' roll band. He has also built a career working with and assisting people with developmental difficulties, including those with mental, physical and personality disorders.
