64 DAYSPA | APRIL 2014 Targeting Cellulite warns Ilike's Hickman, "but it also contributes to cellular dysfunction by slowing down digestion and circula- tion." And chronic stress, reminds Sothys' Pichery, "also encourages lipogenesis, or lipid storage." So, tell clients that making more time for stress-reducing massages and yoga could actually help keep their skin's "orange peel" tendencies down. Smoking Add cellulite to the list of reasons to give up cigarettes. "Smok- ing constricts the capillaries, weaken- ing and thinning out the skin," says Sarfati. "It results in a 20% decrease in cutaneous blood fl ow, making it harder for collagen fi broblasts to proliferate. It also loosens the skin, consequently damaging the connec- tive tissue and hindering its resiliency." Alcohol consumption Drinking alcoholic beverages "interferes with digestion and the elimination of waste, and can also cause dehydra- tion," says Sarfati. UVA exposure "Exposure to UVA (ultraviolet long-wave) light acceler- ates the breakdown of collagen and elastin, both of which affect skin's density," says Sarfati. Count the sun and tanning beds as no-nos here too. Medical conditions/medications It's clear that the problem of cellulite offers yet another reason to perform thorough intake consultations—and to pay close attention to what you learn. "Any client can be at risk," stresses Elizabeth Murchison, director of education at Guinot. "Certain drugs, psychological factors and medical is- sues can contribute to the problem." Hickman cites contraceptives, antibi- otics and steroidal drugs as potential factors. Be sure your staff knows when it may be best to have clients consult with their medical doctors. Poor circulation A sluggish cir- culatory system contributes to the formation of edema, which results in a spongy look. Circulation problems aren't always caused by medical con- ditions. "Even tight clothing can trig- ger cellulite formation, by restricting circulation," points out Natalie Pergar, lead skincare trainer for Éminence. Some experts even believe that panty- hose restrict lymphatic fl ow, forcing that drainage back into the body. Other contributors to the cel- lulite problem include dehydration, a person's body fat distribution and skin type. "Anyone with thinner skin, either naturally or from taking certain medications, is at greater risk," says HydroPeptide's Zangl. Katie O'Reilly is a Wilmington, North Carolina-based writer. dayspamagazine.com/freeinfo • Use FreeInfo #27 Check out next month's Part 2, in which we'll look at a host of in-spa strategies for reducing the appearance of cellulite. mineralogiemakeup.com Pretty Sweet mi neralogiemakeup. co D I S C O V E R T H E S P R I N G C O L L E C T I O N M I N E R A L M A K E U P om N L E C T I O N continued from page 62 T a r g e t i n g C e l l u l i t e 4 1 4 . i n d d 6 4 Targeting Cellulite 414.indd 64 3 / 7 / 1 4 9 : 5 7 A M 3/7/14 9:57 AM
