78 DAYSPA | JUNE 2014 These tiny seeds from a relative of the mint family have been attracting giant-sized attention from the nutrition-conscious. Vanity Fare YOUR WELLNESS SPA Healing News © ISTOCKPHOTO.COM; ISTOCKPHOTO/THINKSTOCK The food: Chia seeds The scoop: Considered one of the "hottest" health foods to eat in 2014, chia seeds are currently being credited with abilities to lower triglyceride levels, stabilize blood sugar, increase energy, improve digestion and serve as a weight- loss aid. Scientifi c research at this point is inconclusive, although some studies do point to cardio- protective properties. The benefi ts: • One of the richest plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids, known to help reduce cholesterol and overall infl ammation • High in free-radical-fi ghting antioxidants • Supplies moderate percentages of the Daily Recommended Intake of minerals such as calcium and magnesium • Seeds form a gel when mixed with liquids, which can be used as an egg replacement in baking • The combination of fat, protein, fi ber and gelling action prolongs satiation • Gluten- and grain-free Sources: Food and Nutrition Information Center; Dr. Andrew Weil (drweil.com); San Francisco Chronicle (sfgate.com) SHARP POINTS ON INFLAMMATION Electroacupuncture—a form of acupuncture in which a small electric current is used—has shown promise as a treatment for infl ammatory diseases, concludes a study recently conducted at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and published in Nature Medicine. Research led by Rutgers immunologist Dr. Luis Ulloa focused on the treatment of infl ammation resulting from sepsis, an infection responsible for 250,000 deaths in the U.S. every year. "In many cases patients [with sepsis] die because of the infl ammatory disorder they develop after the infection," Ulloa explains. However, study results showed that electroacupuncture performed on mice with sepsis stimulated their cytokines—molecules that help limit infl ammation— enabling more of those mice to survive. Ulloa says his team's research points to possible new uses of acupuncture to address other infl ammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and Crohn's disease. They claim that if they didn't make a point of staying on top of every single thing, mayhem would ensue. Dr. Judith Orloff, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, is aiming to dispel them of that notion. Orloff, author of several bestsellers including Emotional Freedom (Crown Publishing, 2010) and Positive Energy (Crown Publishing, 2005), has provided a solution for those who have trouble "going with the fl ow." The doctor's newest book, The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Surprising Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life (Harmony Books, 2014), explains in 12 chapters how "surrendering" to life—not to be confused with giving up on it—enables us to stop fi ghting and working so hard at everything so that we can preserve our energy and remove the roadblocks that prevent us from achieving our goals. "Unless we had extraordinary parents or teachers, most of us didn't learn the merits of letting go," Orloff explains in the book's introduction, citing the chronic tension that develops over a lifetime of "clenching." She continues, "To lighten your load, surrendering involves reprogramming old habits and being willing to let go of the drama." For more information and inspiration, visit drjudithorloff.com.
