22 DAYSPA | JULY 2014 SPOTLIGHT ON... Ayurveda Spa pros discuss the benefi ts of holistic skin care that treats clients from the inside out. Emily Yates, retreat director at Spa-ark Retreats & Spas, based in London, England: Fundamentally, ayurveda is an ancient medical system designed to balance and detoxify the body. In addition to employing herb- and oil-based treatments, our spas' ayurvedic programs can include sug- gested diet and detoxifi cation programs to address clients' skin and body issues. External treatments typically involve drenching the body in oil, exfoliating or steaming the body, and therapies using kizhis —customized poultices of herbs, rice and milk bundled in muslin. I think there's a common miscon- ception in the Western world that ayurvedic treatments are always gentle and serene, which isn't the case. Cer- tain experiences involve detoxifying methods such as enemas, so it isn't always entirely pleasant for the client! However, they can produce remarkable results. Over the years, I've witnessed the effectiveness of this type of treat- ment in addressing serious skin condi- tions such as psoriasis and leukoderma. Sara Wafi a, senior marketing manager of Pratima Ayurvedic Skincare Spa Clinic in New York City: Each of our treatments is de- signed to address a variety of condi- tions, utilizing products and techniques that are customized to the client's do- sha, or biological constitution. Every treatment works to bring harmonious equilibrium to the mind-body system. Our spa offers ayurvedic body treat- ments such as the full-body abhyanga massage, which relaxes the body and relieves tension, as well as encourages detoxifi cation and lymphatic drainage. The ayurvedic approach is com- pletely different from non-ayurvedic skin care, which typically categorizes skin into three main segments: dry, oily/acne-prone and combination. This approach makes the assumption that the causes and treatments for these conditions are the same for everyone within each group. According to the principle of ayurveda, however, no two people are the same. Skincare concerns can be a manifes- tation of an underlying condition and should be addressed accordingly with a unique combination of products, as well as lifestyle recommendations. I believe that only once you approach skin care in this way, will you truly be- gin to see signifi cant improvement in your clients' current imbalances. Jessica Hall, ayurvedic practitioner and owner of Elephant Ayurvedic Wellness Center & Spa in Los Angeles: Prior to any treatment, we invite our guests to enjoy a 20-minute foot soak. We use that time to get to know the client and fi nd out about their diet, lifestyle, and what type of emotion they tend toward, and we analyze their skin and hair. It's more of a personal conversation, which is why we choose to have it while they are in a more relaxed and nurturing setting. I fi nd that many clients are misguided in their understanding of doshas. Many will take an online quiz and think they have their dosha pegged, when in reality those quizzes are merely indicators of imbalances and not the individual's true constitu- tion. That's why these pre-treatment consultations are so important.
