34 DAYSPA | JULY 2014 an energy therapy ask: "Are a lot of people doing it, or just a few?" and "Have experienced clinicians been keeping track of its results, and gaining a body of knowledge?" However, the fact is that for every study that shows positive results from an energy ther- apy, there are naysayers to dispute it. To this, Schwarz reminds, "There are still people who think acupunc- ture is silly, even though there is so much evidence to support its benefi ts." The late Roger Callahan (rogercallahan.com), founder of tapping therapy, is considered a pioneer of energy work. Callahan, alongside his wife Joanne, brought his Callahan Techniques Thought Field Ther- apy to millions of people all over the world. "Sure, when this fi rst came out it was off the wall," Joanne Callahan says. "But when people see that it works on anyone, and even animals, they stop being skeptical. We go into war-torn or traumatized regions of the world and provide relief for entire villages." Old, New and Different Chronic lower backache is a common complaint of many spa clients. Often the problem simply stems from weak or over-taxed muscles. However, energy therapists know that the lower back can be a point at which emotional baggage settles. When that's the case, massage therapy alone won't resolve the issue. That's the time when a client may be receptive to, if not downright desperate for, something she hasn't tried before. Enter energy therapy. Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center and Spa (steamboatsprings.org) in Reno, Nevada, offers several energy therapies involving sound, vibration and color, which allows for customization. "People want to work on their own healing plan," says spa manager Wendy Hill. "They want to be educated fi rst, but once these therapies are explained to them, they want to try them." One of Steamboat Springs' most intriguing treat- ments combines therapeutic geothermal mineral waters with chakra color therapy. Each of the facil- ity's seven private tub rooms features richly colored stained-glass panels that bathe the room in their healing glow. Following the tantric wisdom that each chakra point, or force center, on the body cor- responds to an area of health, Hill and staff are able to direct the client to what they need—for example, the color blue of the fi fth chakra for throat prob- lems. "Once people understand the principle, they come in and know exactly which color they need that day," says Hill. Steamboat also offers to guests the trademarked EDEN ENERGY MEDICINE Founder Donna Eden has devised a combination of acupressure, qigong, therapeutic touch, yoga and kinesiology to balance and restore the body's energy systems.
