36 DAYSPA | JULY 2014 Ultimately, of course, successful energy therapies rely on the practi- tioner. Although the required level of skill and experience varies—becom- ing a true reiki master takes years of training and practice, for instance— some aspects of the treatment can be learned by existing spa staff. Con- sider utilizing certain staff members' distinctive abilities or encouraging their interests by cross-training them to perform some treatments. This can yield treatments and packages that set your spa apart. Exhale, for exam- ple, is able to offer a facial with a reiki add-on. "We have estheticians who are qualifi ed, and who have that ad- vanced training as intuitive healers," says Benge, adding, "Our entire team is continually looking for what's next and what they can offer." Another route is to partner with a local practitioner and host special events or demonstrations of energy therapies at your spa. Follow up with a discount incentive to book private sessions or a series. Most of these re- quire very little in the way of space, and the practitioner already has the necessary tools and equipment. Joanne Callahan suggests several options for bringing tapping into the spa. "We train people on the basics in a two-day weekend," she says. Online courses, YouTube videos, websites and books can deepen their knowledge. "There are simple patterns and codes that allow the therapy to work fast," she says. "And it can be easily com- bined with massage. A great idea for spas would be to hold tapping classes for stress reduction, smoking cessation, weight loss, etc." Schwarz mentions one caveat: en- ergy therapies can bring up lots of un- resolved emotion. "Things could get beyond the spa practitioner's capabil- ity, so be ready with some referrals for mental health professionals who do energy work," he says. "You could ac- tually build a good referral network." Experts say that there's an art, or even "magic," to performing energy work. "A majority of the success I see with clients comes not only from the techniques used but also from know- ing what to clear: emotional events, patterns, beliefs and other blockages that prevent healing," says Scher. "There are so many wonderful and ef- fective techniques out there, but know- ing what to apply those techniques to is crucial in seeing positive results."
