46 DAYSPA | JULY 2014 | The Detox Discussion | W hat types of detox have your clients found most effective? Scott: We take a holistic approach, using far-infrared sauna, Bioslimming (bioslimming.com) wraps—which help reduce the infl ammation that causes collagen breakdown and cellulite—ionic foot cleansing, dietary plans and supplements, and plenty of emotional support. Clients benefi t from each of these. I offer relationship-based counseling to help them develop healthy, balanced relationships with themselves, their work and others. And clients are always more receptive to emotional healing after they've physically detoxed. Kerpen: Our clients reap greatest benefi ts through a combination of services. The FIT Bodywrap (fi tbody wrap.com) we offer not only burns fat cells and eliminates cellulite, but is also an incredible tool for lymphatic drainage. Afterward, my clients feel lighter and renewed, and rave about their glowing skin and their younger-feeling joints. They also fi nd colon hy- drotherapy very effective, and typically shed 10 to 12 pounds of waste after a series of appointments. Gast: Colon hydrotherapy is a mainstay of our spas. When we introduce water to the colon, the body ab- sorbs like a sponge all the water it needs to hydrate itself. At that point, we also remove debris from the colon. So much disease originates in toxic colons! Some people seek out colon hydrotherapy for weight loss, but it also helps reduce fatigue and headaches, as well as infl ammation in the joints—which is often the byproduct of unhealthy eating. We also work with a company called Metagenics (metagenics.com), which offers a 10-day cleanse. People are shocked by how great they feel afterward—and that's the perfect time to coach them on how to continue to eat 'clean'. Figueroa: I offer the M'lis total body cleansing program, which cleanses the liver, bowels, kidneys and blood. It's a three-day liquid detox, followed by a comprehensive program that includes herbal supplements, a whole foods diet and a series of lymphatic body wraps. All of these things help detoxify the liver and kidneys from the outside in, with clients reporting increased energy, less pain, and relief of allergy symptoms. Lindemuth: In addition to our organic gardens and restaurants, our clients have benefi tted from Set-N-Me- Free Aloe Body Wraps (setnmefreealoevera.com), which use heat therapy and detoxifying agents (such as aloe vera, soy proteins and B vitamins) to tone skin, relieve fi bromyalgia and joint discomfort and, for those who opt for mummy-style wrapping, shed inches. They're so relaxing that they're benefi cial to the mind too. H ow do you explain the somewhat abstract concept of detox to spa guests? Gast: I put it in simple terms: The human body can carry up to 40 pounds* of food and bacteria in the colon, and we have to eliminate that. The No. 1 way can we do so is through our largest organ, the TOP: © CHRIS GRAMLY/GETTTY; BOTTOM: © ISTOCKPHOTO.COM * Note: Findings on the potential weight of accumulated waste vary widely with the source.
