50 DAYSPA | JULY 2014 | The Detox Discussion | H ave you had any success retailing detox- friendly home care? Scott: We sell a lot of Bioslimming home care, as well as teas and supplements. Kerpen: I previously managed a health food store, so I came into the spa industry aware of the herbs that function specifi cally to help cleanse organs. We sell a lot of juices, teas and vitamins to assist the body dur- ing the detox process. Figueroa: In addition to M'lis home care, I sell Choffy, a coffee alternative made from roasted, antioxidant- rich cacao. It helps coffee drinkers get through the caffeine-free program. I'm looking into retailing juicers too. Lindemuth: We offer versions of the gels that we use in the Set-N-Me-Free wraps, such as the company's gel body washes. This enhances the effects at home, and reinforces what we coach during the service—that detox is a lifestyle choice. Gast: Colon hydrotherapists are legally restricted from prescribing anything or giving much advice, but we do offer guidelines. For instance, I advise many clients to take nightly magnesium supplements, which can help activate lazy colons. A re there any clients who should avoid detox programs? Lindemuth: Clients with high blood pressure can be at risk. And anyone on medication should talk to their doctor fi rst. Kerpen: We advise all guests to consult their physicians before beginning any detox service, and we always recommend that pregnant or nursing women abstain. Figueroa: Anyone undergoing cancer treatments shouldn't detox—they need those treatment chemi- cals to remain in the body! Gast: People with Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, rectal bleeding or any colon-related disease should not un- dergo colon hydrotherapy. We require clients to fi ll out an extensive form, and then we go through their medi- cal history in person. And, you can overmedicate a client who's taking drugs by introducing water to their colon. Scott: I feel there's truly a detox fi t for everyone, but they must share detailed health background informa- tion and concerns, so that the spa tech can tailor her approach.
