94 DAYSPA | JULY 2014 IN THE NEWS It's no secret that the Green Movement is hitting the beauty industry with full force these days. As words like eco-friendly and sustainable become part of our regular vocabularies, more and more skincare brands are incorporating them into their business philosophies too. However, despite its widespread use, the "green" principle is still unclear to many consumers, according to hair- and skincare giant Aveda. "The word has been used to mean so many things," says Dave Rappaport, vice president of earth and community care at the company. In an effort to clarify what "green" means and to keep consumers in the loop on the details behind Aveda's eco-friendly practices, the company "subjects all of its product packaging and communication materials to extensive internal review to be sure that any claim we make is supported," says Rappaport. As the cosmetics landscape evolves and consumers increasingly demand products that benefit society without sacrificing performance, brand authenticity is key, he adds. "Trends contributing to the realization of this future include the growing focus on the full lifecycle impacts of products, greater transparency of the supply chain, and tools for monitoring and improving developments at every stage," concludes Why so Green? L'Oréal recently added two newly acquired skincare properties to its Professional Products Division: Decléor and Carita. Formerly owned by the Shiseido Group, the two brands boast longstanding presence in the skincare category, a segment that has been a high priority for L'Oréal for more than 100 years. Decléor has offered holistic skin care via essential oils and plant extracts since 1974. Carita, founded by two sisters some 60 years ago, is known for its luxurious, antiaging skincare products. Maplewood, New Jersey-based insurance company Marine Agency Corp. has announced the appointment of R. Charles Stevens as president. Formerly serving as vice president, Stevens is taking over from outgoing president Darryl Stevens, who recently retired. "We don't expect any major changes following Darryl's retirement," says Stevens. "We are fortunate that he has agreed to stay on as a consultant and we look forward to a seamless transition." Stevens' industry experience spans nearly 20 years. He holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration and marketing from Rider University in Lawrence, New Jersey. R.
