62 DAYSPA | NOVEMBER 2014 gentle options dayspamagazine.com/freeinfo • Use FreeInfo #30 • Thermo-based product penetration This rela- tively new method combines the powers of heat/ cold therapy with active ingredients to maximize the impact of each. Pat Lam, co-founder of Skin Care Consultants (lamskin.com), explains, "The heat produced by the machine creates vasodila- tion in the body's connective tissues and the cold produces vasoconstriction." The resulting increase in metabolic activity in the skin allows for more effective penetration of product. • Ultrasound Ultrasound is a good option for cli- ents who want advanced technology without the need for skin penetration to create a smoother, more youthful look. The machines used for ultra- sound facials utilize high-frequency sound waves, and operate at about 10% to 20% the strength of ultrasound machines used for medical imaging. "Ultrasound waves heat up local tissues to collagen-stimulating temperatures of 104 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit and increase blood fl ow, which facilitates the engulfi ng and removal of impurities by the lymphatic system," explains Zangl. "Topical treatments can be penetrated into the skin through ultrasound to both boost and extend treatment results." • Microneedling Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, involves repeatedly making minuscule punctures in the dermis with tiny, sterile needles to induce collagen production and drive ingredients into the skin. Dermatude's META Therapy penetrates the skin's outer layer with microperforation, cueing the skin to increase its natural repair function, producing collagen and Microdermabrasion gradually diminishes hyperpigmentation. © ANDREYPOPOV/GETTY
