IN THE NEWS Honor Mother Nature Approximately 35% of U.S. households and 10% of businesses regularly recycle. However, a national recycling level of 75% would result in the environmental equivalent of removing 50 million cars from the road annually and would generate 1.5 million new jobs. Whether you're an avid or an occasional recycler, let these facts from the non-profi t Recycle Across America (recycleacrossamerica.org) inspire your recycling efforts. • The average person has the opportunity to recycle more than 25,000 cans in their lifetime. • Every three months, Americans dispose of enough aluminum to build our nation's entire commercial air fl eet. • Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. • Recycling one ton of plastic bottles can save the amount of energy equivalent to the annual usage of a two-person household. • Recycling a single three-foot stack of newspapers can save a tree from being cut down. • Recycling one ton of cardboard can save 46 gallons of oil. • Every year, Americans throw away enough offi ce paper to build a 12-foot high wall from Seattle to New York City. • Glass can be recycled and re- manufactured an infi nite number of times. • Making glass from recycled materials helps cut water pollution in half. For further information, practical tips and advice, and to search for recycling centers in your area, visit epa.gov/recycle, iwanttoberecycled.org and earth911.com. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle © GETTY IMAGES To celebrate the 46th annual Earth Day on Friday, April 22, the Earth Day Network, a leading force in the worldwide environmental movement, has developed numerous ways for businesses and individuals to commemorate and support Mother Nature. To start, users can explore how "green" they are by checking out the Network's footprint calculator on earthday.org. This interactive quiz walks visitors through simple questions designed to gauge their ecological impact by asking about everything from the amount of trash they generate to their transportation habits. Looking for ways to make your spa environmentally friendly? Earthday.org's Billion Acts of Green suggests actions that individuals and businesses can pledge to take, including reducing energy consumption, starting a composting pile, cancelling junk mail, implementing solar energy options and recycling electronic waste. The program has helped initiate more than two billion green acts, and is aiming to reach three billion. Another way to give back to the Earth this year is through the network's Trees for the Earth (#Trees4Earth) campaign. Repopulating heavily deforested areas helps fi ght pollution and climate change, and supports communities and local economies. Earth Day Network's program has set a goal to plant 7.8 billion trees by 2020—Earth Day's 50th anniversary. Earthday.org visitors can also view the organization's current campaigns; download an Earth Day Toolkit; learn about environmental bills; submit their own Earth Day commitments and intentions; and discover Earth Day celebrations in their communities. 84 DAYSPA | APRIL 2016
