dayspamagazine.com | APRIL 2016 87 Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute (IDI) recently opened the Dermalogica Learning Loft in Minneapolis—an educational center where spa and salon owners, skincare professionals and postgraduate students can enhance their skills. Located in the city's historic warehouse district, the 1,600- square-foot Learning Loft replaces a former IDI facility that opened in the space 11 years ago. The new Loft will continue to teach the Dermalogica and IDI curriculum to approximately 3,500 students each year. The open-concept space incorporates several new technological additions, including a multi-use classroom that offers open-access student WiFi and downloadable student workbooks, plus twin interactive touchscreen whiteboards and smart projectors. IPads are available for automated student check-in and class registration. An interactive store area, which includes a dedicated SkinBar, will enable product sampling and demonstration, allowing Dermalogica account holders to participate in retail-building training in a live, real-time environment. A wet-chalk area encourages students to express themselves creatively as they share class takeaways and learning experiences. "In a kinesthetic industry such as ours, the need for hands- on training and interactive education tools is vital to the success of professional skin and spa therapists," explains Heather Hickman, senior director of U.S. education for Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute. "Our Learning Loft has been designed with this in mind, while also creating a community hub for industry professionals across the region to share thoughts and ideas, and create new friendships within the industry and the Dermalogica Tribe." Powered by the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA), the AIC grants companies up to $250,000 of investment funds if they achieve certain milestones within a 12-month period. More than 130 applications, in industries ranging from IT software to cleantech renewable energy, were submitted for the Fall 2015 AIC. GLOVE Treat is an all-in-one solution, designed to eliminate the disadvantages of traditional paraffi n wax treatments, which require up to four hours of heating to liquefy the wax, and must then be ladled into plastic bags for individual customer use. The pre-portioned, self-contained paraffi n gloves and boots from gLOVE Treat allow the brand's patented, all-natural lavender and coconut oil-infused paraffi n formula to thoroughly penetrate and moisturize the skin during a 15-minute treatment. After the gLOVE Treat has been heated for two minutes in a conventional microwave oven, its thermochromatic indicator alerts beauty industry pros when the wax is at a safe temperature for use. Each pair of gLOVE Treat gloves and boots can be used up to four times. "We're very excited to be named a winning innovation company by the ACA," says Kevin Weber, CEO of Arizona-based Paraffi n International. "As we accept this generous award, we extend our gratitude to the ACA and look forward to building our business while bringing new job opportunities to Arizona."
