26 DAYSPA | AUGUST 2016 SPAHALEKULANI AT HALEKULANI, OAHU Halekulani welcomed its fi rst guests in 1907, and opened the intimate SpaHalekulani (halekulani.com/ spa-halekulani) nearly a century later. The spa menu focuses on Polynesian therapies and traditional Pacifi c Rim experiences, such as the popular lomi lomi and Samoan nonu massages. There are seven treatment rooms—all private suites—but only one is dedicated to the specialized Ho'olele body treatment (50 min./$185; 80 min./$235). "Ho'olele is a name that was given to us by Kahuna [wise elder] Kauila Clark, a spiritual leader in the Ha- waiian community," says spa director Kamala Nayeli. "It means 'the process of moving or traveling with the feet.' Other countries and cultures practice massage with the use of the feet, but what sets Ho'olele apart is that certain aspects of the treatment resemble hula." The treatment begins on the spa's ocean-facing terrace with a Spa Salutation foot ritual that employs handmade palm frond wands, warm towels and a sig- nature Maile Mist to stimulate circulation. Once inside, the guest lies facedown on a hydraulic table while the therapist, seated on a stool, uses the arch of her foot to knead the guest's shoulders, neck and upper back with sweeping movements and long holds. To massage their lower back and legs, the therapist stands on the table— using straps attached to ceiling beams for balance and support—and applies measured pressure, assisted by gravity and her own weight. Kukui nut oil sourced from Oahu's North Shore is used in the treatment, which concludes with the serving of a pot of green pineapple tea and a Japanese mochi bite on the terrace. `A - WILI SPA AND SALON AT ANDAZ MAUI, MAUI Located on Mokapu Beach in the upscale neighbor- hood of Wailea, Andaz Maui (maui.andaz.hyatt.com) is a welcome sight with its sleek, meditative entry- way leading to a reception area and lanai overlooking infi nity pools, swaying palms and the dazzling Pacifi c. Guests are greeted with fragrant tuberose leis and homemade lavender lemonade.
