Laura enjoyed a service by celebrity facialist Debbie omas at the London West Hollywood I was treated to a mani-pedi using LONDONTOWN's Lakur polish at Olive & June in Santa Monica few weeks ago, I wasn't feeling myself, but I couldn't put my fi nger on what the issue was. Nothing had changed—I had no extra work-related stress, no health concerns, no sudden tax bills—put simply, I wasn't "me." It was my husband who pointed out what we Brits call "the bleedin' obvious"—that spending several hours a day networking needy animals at high-kill shelters on social media and watching back-to-back episodes of Dateline every weekend probably wasn't doing me any good. So, I decided to cut back to a more manageable (not to mention uplifting) schedule— one that didn't begin with "I'll just have a quick look" at Facebook as soon as I opened my eyes in the morning and end with, "But this one's fascinating!" last thing at night. To no one's surprise, I started feeling better within a couple of days. The moral of the story? That too much of anything—including activities and hobbies that at fi rst appear innocuous, fulfi lling or even benefi cial—may eventually cause more harm than good. We slip into a habit, reaching for what's convenient instead of questioning whether our actions still serve us. If the answer is "no," chances are a detox is in order. Spas are no stranger to the notion of detoxifi cation, but now they're approaching the concept in an increasingly modern manner. Case in point: the growing digital detox trend, which strives to combat today's electronic epidemic in ways both practical (a head and shoulder massage) and thoughtful (surrendering mobile phones, and journaling). Check out this month's Making Waves column on page 14 for details. Also tying in to the theme is "Debunking Detox" (page 28), a roundup of common myths and truths behind the popular practice that claims to deliver glowing skin and a gorgeous body. (And speaking of gorgeous bodies, turn to our body contouring Spotlight on page 38 and "Ripple Eff ect" on page 44 for further insight and information on how to whip your clients into shape for summer.) At the end of the day, "everything in moderation" may be another example of the bleedin' obvious, but sometimes it's the mantra we need to get ourselves back on track.
