Sarah met Chantay of Hair La Vie at the Mondrian, West Hollywood Kim Vō turned me blonde at his Beverly Hills salon Y esterday, a friend of mine recounted how her family pediatrician had suggested, in front of her two sons, that the heavier boy eat less and give his "extra" food to his super-skinny brother. This (presumably) unintentionally inappropriate remark is a lower-key—but no less potentially damaging—example of body shaming. No one is immune to this modern, social media-fueled form of abuse: not even celebrities such as Lady Gaga, who was criticized for her "fl abby belly" during her performance at this year's Super Bowl; nor heavily-pregnant-with-twins Beyoncé, who was recently dubbed "fat" by Twitter trolls. So, as a spa owner, how do you react when summer rolls around and clients come to you in droves seeking help in achieving the "perfect" body? The key lies in encouraging them to establish their own realistic standards and then working toward those attainable goals. Whether guests want to tone their bellies or smooth their thighs, you can help make that happen—just be sure you counsel them to strive for fabulous rather than fl awless. We're here with advice too: Our "Wrap Report" feature (page 38) focuses on top body wrap protocols found on spa menus around the country, and our Spotlight on scars and stretch marks (page 32) off ers pro solutions, from products to peels, for tackling those pesky blemishes. Of course, you can also set some non-negotiable rules for everyone, regardless of their personal targets. These include following a healthy diet, getting enough exercise and drinking plenty of water. Another non-negotiable that's especially crucial at this time of year? Sun protection. That's why we've gathered updates from scientists and formulators in our other feature, "Primed for Protection," on page 24. For all of us in the spa industry—in any industry—it's about what works for each individual, and turning a blind eye to criticism. Or, to quote Lady Gaga when she hit back against Instagram bullies, "I'm proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too. No matter who you are or what you do." Correction: On page 48 of our April feature, "The Wild Ones," the quote about licorice by Diana Ralys was mistakenly attributed to Boldijarre Koronczay, president and founder of Éminence. DAYSPA apologizes for the error.
