According to the 2016 Trends in the Hotel Spa Industry report from real estate services giant CBRE, hotel spa departments increased their earnings by 5.6 percent between 2014 and 2015, compared with a 3.3 percent rise in rooms revenue. "Health and wellness is becoming an increasingly important component of everyday life," notes Mark VanStekelenburg, managing director of the CBRE Hotels practice in New York City. "Although historically considered an exclusively high- end hotel amenity, the integration of health and travel is now expected at almost all hotels." According to the report, spa managers were also able to achieve such strong gains because they successfully controlled their expenses. "Given the surge in hotel labor costs that we have seen in recent years, spa managers should be commended for achieving such strong fl ow-through within their departments," adds VanStekelenburg. "In fact, it was a reduction in other operating expenses that offset the increase in labor costs and allowed hotel spa departments to achieve the strong growth in profi ts." in the news industry headlines In its continuing quest to share the latest research about its products for wellness pros, Performance Health recently debuted a new publication, The Journal of Performance Health (JPH): Hands on Science. "Issues include original research as well as translation of research through article summaries and reviews, and practical applications," says Page.
