A s a business owner and employer, one of the most important decisions you must make is whether your staff will be comprised of primarily employees, independent contractors (ICs) or a combination of both. It's important to properly classify a worker because the penalties for failure to do so can be expensive and result in a lot of paperwork. In fact, misclassifying workers invites a lot of scrutiny from government agencies such as the IRS, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and their state counterparts. Whether classifying a worker as an employee or IC, it's best to get it right from the get-go.
