According to the National Comorbidity Survey report, 5 percent of men and more than 10 percent of women experience PTSD at some point in their lives. Among war veterans, those percentages skyrocket, with about one-third of returning troops diagnosed as having the disorder. The conventional methods of treating PTSD include medication, counseling and various forms of therapy (pet, art and music, for example). But, a study conducted at the George Washington University and presented at the American Physiological Society's annual meeting in April off ers up a new option in PTSD treatment: orange essential oil. Mice were exposed to the oil via inhalation before and after exposure to stress administered by Pavlovian fear conditioning. The aroma was found to ease stress and fear markers such as "freezing," and alter immune cells known to be a marker of PTSD biochemical pathways. Although further studies are needed to better understand how orange essential oil works on the brain and nervous system, this result lends further credence to the use of aromatherapy as a substitute or adjunct to more conventional and potentially disruptive treatments.
