The curriculum will focus on self-love, breathing and mindfulness: The youngsters will be taught to let go of shame, anger and blame, and to accept themselves and others; breathing exercises to improve health and manage stress; and about mindfulness (from healthy eating to nature walks) to improve their emotional and physical well-being. "We believe that focusing on physical and mental wellness at such an early age is so important that it can help decrease the worldwide depression and obesity rates, even crime rates," said GWD founder Belgin Aksoy Berkin. "It's time for those in the wellness industry to take action. With the GWD Kids Project, children will learn how to integrate wellness into their lives on a daily basis and to carry on those practices for good." The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved BOTOX Cosmetic (Allergan) for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe forehead lines—its third indication, in addition to treating crow's feet and glabellar lines. "Forehead lines are a top area of concern for patients," says David Nicholson, chief research and development offi cer at Allergan. "Our goal in pursuing a third indication for BOTOX Cosmetic for the improvement of forehead lines was based on our desire to study the patient selection, dosing and injection pattern to help provide optimal treatment outcomes." This most recent FDA approval has established BOTOX as the only neurotoxin indicated for three facial treatment areas, as well as the only neurotoxin brand approved for aesthetic indications beyond glabellar lines in the U.S. The Kids Are Alright The 2017 Medical Spa State of the Industry Report, compiled by the American Med Spa Association (AmSpa), revealed that medspas have become one of the most fruitful new industries in the U.S. over the last fi ve years: Revenues have increased by more than 20 percent per year since 2013. "Medical spas represent a four billion dollar industry—one that our survey projects will grow an additional 8 percent by 2020," says AmSpa founder and director Alex Thiersch. In addition, the report found that: ■ The medspa industry is fueled by a diverse group of professionals, from physicians to service providers and many others in between. ■ Millennials (ages 18-34) have surpassed Boomers in numbers, accounting for nearly 20 percent of medspa clients. Focused on prevention, they will likely contribute to the industry's continued growth. ■ Although more than 85 percent of clients are women, men are becoming increasingly comfortable receiving aesthetic treatments as the stigma of visiting spas decreases.
