It was developed by a committee of 28 rosacea experts from around the word and based on recent scientifi c research, as the original classifi cation system was created in 2002. Since then, studies have found that: The trademark redness is likely part of an "infl ammatory continuum" that starts in the neurovascular and immune systems; and irregularities in key skin components—such as cathelicidins and mast cells—may play a role, in addition to genetics and the microbiome. For these reasons, the committee ultimately decided to focus on individual characteristics (phenotypes) for classifi cation and diagnoses, which should result in more tailored treatments for each individual. According to the new system, the presence of redness or facial thickening is enough to diagnose rosacea, and the same goes for two or more major signs including papules and pustules, fl ushing and telangiectasia (spider veins). "Although rosacea's various phenotypes may appear in diff erent combinations and at diff erent times, research suggests that all are manifestations of the same underlying disease process," says Richard L. Gallo, MD, PhD, one of the article's authors. in the news industry headlines TOP RIGHT: © GETTY IMAGES Two spa franchises may soon be available in a city near you.
