Elina Organics, the company spearheaded by cosmetic chemist, herbalist and esthetician Elina Fedotova, celebrated its 20-year anniversary this past September. In addition to a range of products sold in skincare salons and medical offi ces across the country, holistic treatments are available at the brand's eponymous spas in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Chicago. "Many of our clients have been with us for 20 years and we could not be more grateful for their support," says CEO and formulator Fedotova. "Without our customers' ability to recognize and appreciate a healthy approach to beauty, we would not be where we are today." u Mindful people experience less pain, according to the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. To arrive at this conclusion, researchers fi rst had 76 healthy volunteers who had never meditated before complete a Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory questionnaire. Then, while undergoing fMRI, the test subjects were exposed to painful heat stimulation. Whole brain analyses revealed that people with higher mindfulness ratings had less activation of a brain region called the posterior cingulate cortex and experienced less pain, while those with lower mindfulness ratings had greater activation of this part of the brain and felt more pain. "Now we have some new ammunition to target this brain region in the development of eff ective pain therapies," says lead researcher Fadel Zeidan, PhD, assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomy. "Based on our earlier research, we know we can increase mindfulness through relatively short periods of meditation training, so this may prove to be an eff ective way to provide relief for the millions of people suff ering from chronic pain."
