66 @dayspamagazine • May 2019 IN THE NEWS © GETTY IMAGES BEYOND BOTOX A new cosmetic injectable has hit the market. In February, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) by Evolus for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines between the eyebrows. The FDA approval was supported by data from two randomized, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled U.S. clinical trials. "The outcomes I've seen for my clinical trial patients fi rsthand, combined with the comprehensive clinical data set for Jeuveau, provide a compelling new treatment option for physicians and their aesthetic patients," says dermatologist and clinical investigator Ava Shamban, MD. "I look forward to incorporating Jeuveau into my aesthetic product offerings." u Sunscreen Rules The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a proposed mandate in Februar y that would update regulator y requirements for most sunscreen products. The new rule includes changes aimed at increasing safety and effi cacy of nonprescription, over-the-counter (OTC) offerings, including details on active ingredients, dosage, sun protection factor (SPF) and broad-spectrum requirements. It also proposes updates as to how products should be labeled to make it easier for consumers to identify key information. The FDA is seeking public comments on the proposed rule, which can be submitted on or before May 28 at regulations.gov. "It is impor tant that, as this rulemaking effor t moves for ward and the FDA gathers additional scientifi c information, given the recognized public health benefi ts of sunscreen use, consumers continue to use sunscreen in conjunction with other sun protection measures," says Janet Woodcock, MD, director of the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "To help make sure this effor t is successful, the FDA is looking to gather the data needed to help ensure that products marketed to offer protection from the sun's effects are safe and deliver on these promises."
