HEALING NEWS Shine a Light on Sun It may seem impossible for skincare professionals to believe but, according to a new nationwide survey conducted by Harris Interactive, a large number of Americans are still in the dark when it comes to sun protection. Some results of the survey: • 38% of Americans believe that sunscreen is mainly for use on a sunny day. (The American Academy of Dermatology says 80% of the sun's UV rays can penetrate and damage the skin, even on cloudy days.) • 40% of Americans say the main risk of sun exposure is sunburn. (Risks of sun exposure include pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions, benign tumors and small blood vessel dilation, in addition to premature skin aging.) • 33% of Americans contend that the darker a person's skin, the less susceptible they are to sun damage. (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that everyone's skin is damaged by UV exposure, although lighter skin types are more at risk for developing cancer.) "The American public is still not in a place where they are sun smart every time they step out of their door," concludes Farah K. Ahmed, chair of the Personal Care Products Council Sunscreen Committee, and adds that the committee's ultimate hope is to make sun protection "as much of a habit as putting on a seatbelt." For skincare practitioners, the message is simple: Keep that sun protection education coming! Partner Yoga Plus 36 DAYSPA | NOVEMBER 2013 STATE OF MASSAGE Calling upon U.S. government statistics, clinical studies, and surveys of consumers and therapists, the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) has compiled a wealth of useful and comprehensive information regarding the state of the massage therapy industry. Here are just a few of the facts the Association has gathered: • There are an estimated 280,000 to 320,000 massage therapists and massage school students in the U.S. • The U.S. Department of Labor has estimated that employment for massage therapists will increase by 20% from 2010 to 2020. • About 85% of massage therapists are female. • 41% of massage therapists are under the age of 35. • Between July 2011 and July 2012, about 34.5 million adult Americans experienced at least one massage. To prove it, the University's Sexual Wellness Clinic is offering 90-minute partner yoga sessions specifically developed to address emotional and physical challenges that may be impeding a couple's sexual relationship. The sessions will include exercises in connecting the mind and body, finding life balance, allowing oneself to be vulnerable and envisioning greater intimacy. "Distance and resentment can develop in marriages over time," explains Susan Walsh, a psychologist and yoga instructor at the clinic. "Partner yoga can clear this negative energy and help a couple reconnect and become comfortable with touch and intimacy. It's one way that we can help couples strengthen their relationship emotionally, physically and spiritually to ultimately build a deeper connection and improve sexual health." So if your spa offers yoga, why not consider a special discount for couples? You might very well end up saving a relationship—and gaining more grateful and loyal clients!
