EDITOR'S PAGE Enjoy the Scenery Year's end is a good time to remind oneself to strive for a conscious life. H ere you are, in the thick of the holiday season, and the last thing you have time to do is put your feet up and read DAYSPA magazine. But, since it's only the end of October as I write this, and I've just returned from three inspiring days at the International SPA Association (ISPA) conference in Las Vegas, I'd like to share a message from the past: Slow down and give yourself a conscious moment. There was so much to soak in and enjoy about ISPA, but I think it was the keynote addresses at the second day's general session that resonated most with me. Presenting under the theme "Mind, Body, Spirit", each of the three speakers had a valuable message to deliver: Former broadcast news journalist Michelle Gielan, co-founder of the Institute for Applied Positive Research and executive producer of the PBS special The Happiness Advantage, explained how framing information in an optimistic way has the power to "inoculate our brains against stress and negativity." Dr. Janet Lapp, licensed clinical psychologist, registered nurse and workplace consultant, reminded us that, left unchecked, our brains tend to attach themselves to "the wrong stuff"—namely, external factors over which we have little control (such as your star massage therapist spraining her wrist during your busiest week!). Lapp's best advice was also her simplest: "Let it go." Wyatt Webb, founder of the Equine Experience at Miraval Resort & Linda Kossoff Spa in Tucson, Arizona, pointed out that by neglecting to focus internally Executive Editor on our feelings, we disconnect from ourselves and, consequently, from others. "The human species is the only one for whom the present isn't enough," Webb stated. All of the above explains why spas are key to overall societal health. They help people slow down, let go and focus internally. Your spa's treatment and caring make all the difference. We also now understand that your spa's environment—from its sounds and scents to its colors and use of space—can facilitate a lasting, healing experience. And it doesn't matter how big or small your spa is, either, as this month's article on spa design, "Style By the Inch" (page 40), clearly demonstrates. And for even more on creating an optimal healing environment, check out Your Wellness Spa on pages 38 and 39. Finally, if you're still looking for ways to help your busiest and most harried clients take a muchneeded breather this season, check out some fabulous 30-minutes-and-under facials ("Mini but Mighty", page 26) currently drawing raves at spas across the country. As we exist in a culture that so often tries to speed us through our lives at the expense of losing our moments, let's end this year with a promise to slow down, just long enough to keep in touch with ourselves. From the entire DAYSPA team, here's wishing you a peaceful, fulfilling and mindful New Year. 16 DAYSPA | DECEMBER 2013
