Style By the Inch Cozy nooks and a neat, efficient retail display system satisfy clientsÕ and staffersÕ layout needs. Simply Skin Face & Body Spa | Charlotte, North Carolina Date opened: 2003, with a remodel in 2012 Owner: Rita Weeks Size: 955 square feet Number of employees: Five Services offered: Body treatments, facials, LED light therapy, makeup applications and consultations, microdermabrasion Product lines: BIOSLIMMING, blinc, Clarisonic, Éminence, Jane Iredale, Nufree/Finipil, PCA Skin, PRIORI, RapidLash, Revaléskin Working out of a tiny treatment space is rather like living on a house boat: Everything must have its own place or the result is chaotic clutter. That's something that Simply Skin Face & Body Spa's Rita Weeks knows all too well. Working with an under-1,000-square-foot space, Weeks has carved out four treatment rooms, a dual makeup station and a relaxation area for clients. With retail sales comprising a huge part of her business—50% of the spa's revenue—Weeks faced the additional challenge of finding space to display and stock all her goods. The spa owner solved the problem by creating 44 DAYSPA | DECEMBER 2013 a dedicated section of the spa that doubles as a makeup application and retail area. Custom-built cabinets store makeup—thereby freeing up space on the spa's shelves for other product—while multitiered tester displays ensure that makeup is readily accessible for easy application. The spa carries one makeup and five skincare lines—an ambitious decision that could have resulted in an overabundance of bottles and jars in each room. Instead, Weeks set aside an area in the back of the spa where all back bar items are kept. Before each treatment, estheticians stock their trays with the product they will use on their client. "That way, we don't need to stock every room with back bar," she concludes. Weeks admits that with a tight space, "there are always challenges. We sometimes wish we had more room, but we make it work." One solution is to change up the spaces during different seasons of the year. For example, she rearranges the retail space during the holidays to make way for seasonal gifts. The owner's ambitious plans for her small space work well: "I always wanted a small, manageable space with a warm atmosphere," says Weeks. "Clients really do love the coziness."
