Style By the Inch Light, monotone hues allow the rooms at A Spa Above to appear wider. A Spa Above | Staten Island, New York Date opened: August 2008 Owner: Lynn Cutolo Size: 1,200 square feet Number of employees: Four Services offered: Laser hair removal, LED light therapy, waxing, massages, facials and facial treatments including peels, microdermabrasion, Dermaplaning, Catio Lift, Clear + Brilliant Product lines: B Kamins, EltaMD, RejuvaLift, VI Peel Being married to a successful plastic surgeon in the New York metropolitan area, Lynn Cutolo has always been mindful of the increasing demand for tummy tucks, facelifts and other cosmetic procedures. So it felt like a logical step for Cutolo to expand her family business by adding a spa component that would offer an extensive menu of treatments—including postoperative solutions—allowing the two practices to operate in tandem. The problem? Her husband's clinic was located in a two-story residence, meaning that options were limited. The second floor was available, but measuring in at only 1,200 square feet and handicapped by such space invaders as low, slanted ceilings, it hardly seemed like the perfect choice. So Cutolo worked with designer Alexis Ufland to help her convert the space into a spa with a "wow" factor. "Lynn had a number of reservations before opening because she knew there were so many obstacles to 50 DAYSPA | DECEMBER 2013 overcome," explains Ufland. "But we felt that if we did it right, we could create something really special." Together, they set about maximizing the minimal space, focusing on three key aspects that would make it appear larger. First, they selected a light, bright monotone palette of whites, iced blues and creams to make the walls and furnishings blend together and the rooms look wider. Second, wary of the fact that clutter makes things look and feel small, they created a "working closet" with sliding doors that run almost floor to ceiling. Behind the sliding doors are shelves for storage, a sink, work space, hamper, garbage bin and a place to roll in a skincare trolley. "We can literally hide everything in the closet!" raves Ufland. As for those pesky ceilings, "Instead of trying to make them disappear we actually decided to make them pop by using woodpaneled planks to create a dramatic, rich, cottage look and feel." The end result? A space that could rival any deluxe spa. "When you walk upstairs it feels like you've entered a totally different space," says Ufland. "The plastic surgeon's office feels clinical, while the medical spa is calm, cool, serene and fresh. It's the perfect balance between clinical and luxurious. The clients love the upstairs—it's like a little getaway. They can't believe it when we tell them there are only four rooms!" Alison Singh Gee is a Los Angeles-based author and journalist.
