Clearing the Air Ahhhh…oxygen! Oxygen facials are beloved by spas and clients alike—Madonna's assistant was reportedly spotted transporting the entertainer's personal oxygen facial treatment machine out of a hotel last year, and the Material Girl is said to have a machine at each of her residences. And there's no doubt about oxygen's effectiveness in encouraging the healing of skin in a medical setting. It's critically important for wound healing through the production of granulation tissue (the new connective tissues and tiny blood vessels that form on the surface of a wound) and increasing resistance to infection. However, in the spa industry, the picture gets a little fuzzier: Although oxygen treatments remain popular, the esthetic use of pressurized oxygen is still often 58 DAYSPA | DECEMBER 2013 misunderstood. Coming to grips with this sometimes confusing topic starts with helping your clients understand the connection between oxygen and good skin. "Oxygen is core support for sustaining, or restoring, the skin's general health and youthful appearance," says Rona Solomon, president of Dermal Esthetics – Research Division. "However, as early as our mid-20s, oxygen insufficiency at the cellular level causes a persistent, low-grade and most often insidious inflammation that inhibits collagen synthesis and triggers symptoms of premature aging and other inflammatory skin conditions."
