IN THE NEWS The nwa Ru port Re y NAILS Beyond the dazzling prints and textures of this season's looks, another trend was highly prevalent at New York Fashion Week in September: nails. OPI (opi.com) was in full force, providing nail fashions for 11 runway shows during the week-long fashion extravaganza. Nail colors were a mixture of light and bright hues and included sheer, subtle grays, white-tips, warm pinks, bright yellow and blue slanted French-tipped digits. OPI's runway marathon topped off the styles of: • Joanna Mastroianni • BCBGMAXAZRIA • Holmes & Yang • Candela • Reem Acra • Jenni Kayne • JOIE • Houghton • Elizabeth and James • Jeremy Laing China Glaze (an American International Industries brand, aiibeauty.com) delivered out-of-this-world nails during New York Fashion Week, creating styles for Cushnie Et Ochs and Alon Livne. For the Cushnie Et Ochs show, the China Glaze team custom-made stiletto nails with a striking horizontal band of sterling silver polish strewn across them. "The look was inspired by straitjackets and straps and basically being bound up," says the brand's celebrity manicurist Patricia Yankee. "We wanted to create a look that would embody this on nails." For Alon Livne, the company drew inspiration from extraterrestrial creatures, creating barely-there, curved designs. "The idea was to practically erase the look of the nail, keeping a nude, neutral finger lending an ambiguous effect that almost begs the question, 'Is the model human or alien?'" says China Glaze manicurist Jacqueline Saulsbery. The beauty world was in full force at Fashion Week, proving that a fashionable face is the perfect complement to a killer ensemble. Essie (essie.com) nail hues were a prominent presence at New York Fashion Week as well—the nail brand sponsored a total of 18 fashion shows. Essie's roster of high-profile designer pals included Nanette Lepore, Rebecca Minkoff, Donna Karan, Diane von Furstenberg, Helmut Lang and Alexander Wang. The brand's team of nail pros worked round-the-clock to deliver showstopping digits that ranged from light and whimsical with a dash of sparkle, to bold solids such as red and navy, to Day of the Dead-inspired designs, to clean, fresh pastels. "New York Fashion Week is the epitome of creativity and style," says Essie Weingarten, founder and creative director. "It's always an honor to work with such talented designers and artists. I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to collaborate on color trends with them and in creating the ultimate accessory that nails have become." 94 DAYSPA | DECEMBER 2013 ESSIE: REBECCA MINKOFF ESSIE: JILL STUART ESSIE: JENNY PACKHAM CHINA GLAZE: ALAN LEVINE OPI: BCBGMAXAZRIA OPI: JOANNA MASTROIANNI OPI: CANDELA OPI: JOIE
