DATE BOOK WRAP UP 2013 ISPA Conference & Expo, Las Vegas The 2013 ISPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas stayed true to its "grow" theme with its educational offerings and inspirational seminars and speakers. Held at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino from October 21-23, the three-day event brought together the spa industry's latest innovations, education and cuttingedge products, with some 220 exhibitors and sponsors including Éminence, Sothys, HydroPeptide, Naturopathica and Jurlique. The show's agenda was filled with talks and workshops on topics such as Why You Should Care About Wellness Tourism and Five Secrets of a Highly Engaged Spa Team. Also among the show's more than 2,400 attendees were several inspirational keynote speakers, including: • Deborah Szekely, founder of the Golden Door spa in Escondido, California, and, more recently, Wellness Warrior, a nonprofit that lobbies members of Congress to support wellness initiatives. • Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS shoes, who was presented with the Alex Szekely Humanitarian Award. Mycoskie discussed his journey in growing a unique "one for one" business model to worldwide success. • Michelle Gielan, co-founder of the Institute for Applied Positive Research, who shared how her career beginnings in today's negativity-based news media spurred her to explore ways to harness the power of optimism to produce positive results in oneself and in others. • Dr. Janet Lapp, a registered nurse and clinical psychologist, who discussed stress management. She explained how people who handle stress well tend to "funnel everything in their lives through a central purpose" and are able to "let go." • Wyatt Webb, founder of the Equine Experience at Miraval Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona. Webb explained how society's focus on the external causes individuals to disconnect from themselves and, consequently, from others close to them. He urged audience members to increase their awareness of their feelings in real time and thereby "live a conscious life." • Bill Rancic, entrepreneur and TV personality, who recounted the many lessons he has learned throughout his business experiences and discussed the importance of separating your expectations from your shortcomings. Rounding up the event was the presentation of the 2013 ISPA Visionary Award to Horst Rechelbacher, founder of Aveda Corp. and Intelligent Nutrients, who gave a heartwarming acceptance speech via video. 106 DAYSPA | JANUARY 2014 Clockwise from top right: G.M.
