such as A, C, D, E and K—are also useful in triggering the production of skin's own hydrating factors. "Vitamins B and E are known to prevent water loss from dehydration in the upper layers of the stratum corneum," says Somme Institute's Sforza. "B3 helps prevent water loss and supports the skin barrier; B5 is a humectant that has tissue-healing properties; and vitamin E is considered an antioxidant, is easily absorbed and acts to heal tissue and prevent water loss." Special skin types may require additional education. For instance, in trying to combat oil, teens and other acneic clients might use products that strip their skin, which only serves to dry it out and lead to the excessive production of sebum to restore its protective mechanisms. "Explain to these guests that proper hydration actually rebalances skin and decreases excess sebum," says Pichery. The same principle applies to sensitive-skin clients. "The door is open for you to explain that sensitive skin implies a weak stratum corneum," says Malibu C's Rice. "A lack of hydration will compound that sensitive skin, and make the client more susceptible to triggers such as seasonal weather changes, the environment and chemicals." Make sure your staff is prepared to educate clients as to how hormones, medications and illness can affect their skin. "Depending on those specific conditions and the evolution of guests' skin, adjustments in skincare regimens are almost always necessary," says Dr. Christian Jurist, medical director of global education at Pevonia (pevoniapro.com). The more open and informative you are, the more clients will seek your knowledge. "They'll understand you have their concerns in mind, and they'll appreciate it," says Murchison.
