SPOTLIGHT ON... Scars and Stretch Marks Read how medical spa pros tackle this tricky issue, and review some key solutions below. By Sarah Carillo What types of services do you provide to address scars and stretch marks? Lisa Chism, R.N. and owner of Simply Beautiful Med Spa, Gassville, Arkansas: We have two ways to address scars and stretch marks. I've tried IPL (intense pulsed light) on stretch marks and it works well, but you have to do a lot of treatments to get effective results from it. So it's an expensive way to do it but it does work. What works even better is needling. You can use a permanent cosmetics tattoo pen or a needling machine. You roll it over the skin to recreate the healing process in areas that have stretch marks or scar tissue. The client's immune system then kicks in and brings up cells like macrophages to eat up debris that shouldn't be in the tissue. So the skin re-heals itself. Andrea Dunn, owner of Beautiful Image in Peachtree City, Georgia: We offer a needling treatment using Meta-ject FX50 which includes an 18-point facial module. Because the machine has multiple modules, the device is able to address a variety of issues, such as acne scarring and even stretch marks. Theresa Bush, advanced scar and skin color rest- oration specialist working with Serenity MedSpa in San Francisco: My practice focuses on normalizing irregular pigmentation and minimizing damaged tissue through the use of translucent dermatologic pigment powders that are liquefied with saline and injected directly into the dermis. There is no such thing as a 'miracle cure' or a quick fix. Due to their translucent properties, medical pigments require several applications to obtain the desired result. Typically, the greater the contrast between the stretch mark or scar and the undamaged skin, the faster the result. Generally, three to four procedures, spaced four to six weeks apart, are all that's required. Nancy Gaitanaros, owner of Revive MedSpa in Toronto, Ontario: We have two treatments. The first is the Green Peel [an herbal peel developed by dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek-Drusio]. This removes two layers of the damaged skin, enabling healthy skin cells to come to the surface. It also works on fine lines, scars and stretch marks, and it's safe for all skin types. For lighter skin we can also do the resurfacing laser called Fraxional. It helps the skin build new collagen and smooths the surface of a stretch mark or scar to Damage Control Apothederm Stretch Mark Cream A powerful peptideinfused formula works to fade stretch marks and nourish skin. 877.496.0038, apothederm.com 30 DAYSPA | iS Clinical Super Serum Advance+ This potent serum treats hyperpigmentation, scar tissue and fine stretch marks. 888.807.4447, isclinical.com FEBRUARY 2014 G.M.
