SPOTLIGHT ON... make it less noticeable. You'll see results even after the first treatment for both, but it usually take three to five to achieve full results. What are some common misconceptions about scar and stretch mark treatment? Bush: The most common misconception it that only pregnant women and/or overweight people get stretch marks. However, stretch marks are formed following rapid changes in body size, such as a growth spurt during puberty or in pregnancy, or after weight gain or muscle building. There's also evidence to suggest stretch marks are genetic, so if your mother has stretch marks, the odds are you will too. Dunn: A scar is a scar. There is no magic spell or potion to make it disappear completely. However, there are methods, such as needling, that allow for improvement. I think it's important to address this with clients. Chism: A lot of people come in and think they're going to get one treatment and their issue will be completely resolved. You have to make sure the client's expectations are in line with reality. It seems that spa goers may not even be familiar with these types of treatments. Why is that the case? Chism: We generally don't advertise these types of services—if clients come in for a consultation about something else and happen to mention a scar, then that's when l bring up our scar treatments. To be honest, the treatment is time consuming, and people get frustrated because it takes more visits (and money) than they think it will. So consultations are very important; you want to make sure when you treat the client that you're both on the same page with expectations. Bush: Medical pigmentation isn't typically available at spas, but it is commonly used in hospitals and private medical clinics offering plastic surgery or dermatology. What type of home care do you recommend? Chism: Home care is very important after needling. If clients don't take care of the treated area properly at home and use the right products on it, it's going to take longer to get results. I recommend the Stone Crop line from Éminence, which helps the skin heal faster. Vitamin E oil, or other oil-based solutions that keep the skin moist, can help. I just want clients to be careful not to put on a Band-Aid because the treatment area needs air—otherwise heat gets trapped around it, potentially causing bacteria to grow. However, if it's in a spot that's continually rubbing, like at the waist line, I recommend wearing a light t-shirt or dress over that spot to protect it during the day.
