ONE ON ONE WITH... April Zangl, CEO of HydroPeptide 74 DAYSPA | FEBRUARY 2014 Zangl with husband and sons H ow has your fitness and wellness background come into play in your position as the leader of a skincare company? My education and knowledge of physiology and how the skin works has really helped me in my current career. I'm able to provide unique insight into what actually works for the body and what doesn't. In fact, I'm known as the 'ingredients expert' around the office! college so the law career dream quickly ended. W hat do you do in your spare time? I have two little boys and a baby on the way. I try to dedicate my free time to my family. I'm naturally a high-strung person and I think being married has really helped me with that. My husband calms me down! D W I W oes physical fitness still play a role in your life? Yes! I still attend and teach fitness classes. My favorite class is kickboxing—I like high-intensity workouts. I also run every day and take part in marathons. Running really helps me to unwind. My goal is to run a marathon in less than three and a half hours. f you could work in any other type of profession, what would it be? It would probably be something related to the fitness industry or maybe in law. I've always liked structure. For most of my life, leading up to college, I wanted to be a lawyer and considered law school, but I could just never really decide what type of law I wanted to pursue. As it turned out I took a job in sales right after omen's handbag contents can reveal a lot about them—what's in your handbag? I try to keep my purse clean because I have small children who like to pull stuff out! I don't want anything to get ruined or lost, so I stick to the basic essentials: lip plumper, phone, wallet and my coupon book. I love deals! ho has been your greatest inspirational influence? I don't know that there has been one particular person who has influenced me, but growing up, I remember being very inspired by a poem written by Mother Teresa, entitled "Do it Anyway". It talks about the importance of persevering no matter what people think and not letting others' opinions affect you. © MCKENZIE PHOTOGRAPHY April Zangl is no stranger to hard work. As a child growing up on a horse ranch in Oregon, she was raised to apply a strong work ethic to every project she took on, no matter how big or small. "Being brought up on a farm, we had to make sure the work was done before we could relax," she recalls. "I've carried that mindset into my adulthood and all the jobs I've held so far." As for her current job as co-founder, co-formulator and CEO of HydroPeptide, Zangl says her work is never done. "I wear many different hats in my role," she explains. "It depends on the day and what we're trying to accomplish—I multitask really well." Considering her multi-faceted position, it's hard to believe that this skincare maven has not been entrenched in the industry since day one. But in truth, Zangl's career path to HydroPeptide happened quite by accident. "I have a strong background in fitness and wellness management," she shares. "In college [Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah], I took a lot of courses on physiology and biology. I considered launching a law career specializing in medical malpractice." But it was not to be. After graduation, Zangl took a job in pharmaceutical sales. This alternative route ultimately led her to befriend Dr. Louise Peck, a renowned expert in nutritional science. The women hit it off and Zangl began working alongside Peck as she researched and developed a skincare line that centered on one key, innovative ingredient: peptides. In 2004 the hard work and effort paid off and HydroPeptide was launched. Zangl is quick to say that her ride thus far has been a rewarding one. "It has been amazing to see the company grow over the years," she says. "We've been able to meet a consumer need for multifunctional products that are truly results-driven." With all that work in developing and bringing a brand to market behind her, is it finally time for Zangl to sit back and relax? Not quite. In addition to her ongoing work in growing and marketing HydroPeptide, the wife and mother of two is gearing up for her latest adventure, as she prepares to welcome her third child, a girl, into the world. DAYSPA recently checked in with Zangl to get the scoop on her life as skincare guru, proud wife and mommy, and self-proclaimed fitness junkie. —Angela Melero
