108 DAYSPA | APRIL 2014 IN THE NEWS São Paulo recently passed a ban on animal testing for cosmetics, making it the first Brazilian state to do so. The law, signed in late January, demands a hefty fine of $435,000 from any institution or research center that fails to comply. The ban, which will affect more than 700 cosmetic companies, covers both finished products and ingredients. São Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin consulted with animal rights representatives, cosmetic industry leaders, veterinarians and scientists before coming to a decision. "We listened to all sectors and decided to pass the law," says Alckmin. "Our Cruelty-Free Brazil campaign for a complete ban has received huge public support and we applaud the groups in São Paulo who have fought hard for this victory for animals," he adds. Although a trailblazer in its country, São Paulo is just one of many states and countries to jump on the banning bandwagon. Europe was the first to ban animal testing in cosmetics in 2009 and went on to pass a complete ban on the sale of animal-tested products in March 2013. Since then, countries such as New Zealand, South Korea and Australia are considering similar actions. HydroPeptide's trusted products are getting a facelift. The company announced a brand re-launch that includes sleek and sustainable new packaging, new micro collections (which incorporate existing best-sellers plus a new four-piece line of clarifying products that address both adult acne and antiaging concerns) and enhanced formulations that feature more than 60 unique peptides. The new micro collections comprise: • Anti-Wrinkle • Anti-Wrinkle+Sensitive • Anti-Wrinkle+Clarify • Targeted Solutions Despite the changes, the company is keen to reassure spa pros that the new/updated formulas and products will deliver the same luxurious experience for which HydroPeptide is known, but with enhanced results. Rechelbacher's career in beauty and skin care spanned nearly 60 years, beginning when he was only 14 years old. The young Austrian ambitiously took on a three-year apprenticeship in the hair industry, after which he decided to spread his wings and take his chances as a stylist in the U.S. It was here that he would come to found Aveda, the global, plant-based cosmetic company with roots in ayurvedic principles. "He brought holistic beauty to the industry, connecting hair, face and body as one," says Dominique Conseil, global president of Aveda. After two decades of growing Aveda into a world-renowned brand, Rechelbacher sold the company in 1997 to Estée Lauder for $300 million. In 2008, Rechelbacher launched health and beauty company Intelligent Nutrients, whose mission is to deliver products based on organic, non-toxic, food-derived ingredients. In addition to being an industry leader, Rechelbacher was also an established author, having written four books on the beauty philosophies and principles in which he so strongly believed: Minding Your Business, Rejuvenation, Aveda Rituals and Alivelihood. Rechelbacher is survived by his wife, Kiran Stordalen; daughter Nicole Thomas; son-in-law Peter Thomas; son Peter; daughter-in-law Mindy Rechelbacher; and his grandchildren, Emma, Richard, Ruby and Jada. The late Dr. James Fulton was honored by the National Aesthetic Spa Network (NASN) for his accomplishments and innovations in skin care at NASN's 10th anniversary conference in Del Rey, Florida, on January 26. The world-renowned dermatologist, who died on July 4, 2013, is credited with co-developing Retin-A and benzoyl peroxide, and co-founding beauty brand Vivant Skin Care. "Dr. Fulton did so much for our industry during his lifetime," said Denise R. Fuller, founder of NASN. "We have a lot to thank him for and NASN is here to do that today." Fulton's daughter, Kelly Fulton-Kendrick, who serves as CEO of Vivant Skin Care, accepted the award on his behalf.
