64 DAYSPA | JUNE 2014 Targeting Cellulite START IT UP Even when it seems that homecare topicals and in-spa treatments are producing smoothing miracles, the main- tenance of such improvement hinges primarily on ongo- ing, healthy circulation, says Flora Vergnolle, founder of Provence Cosmetics. Vergnolle explains that cellulite reduction, as well as the restoration of skin tone, rests specifi cally upon the micro-circulation that occurs deep below the outer skin layers. "Healthy micro-circulation leads to restored connective tissue, which reduces the 'pulling down', dimpling effects of cellulite and de- creases cells' fl uid retention. This in turn shrinks fat cells, combating that counter, 'push-up' action." Getting blood fl ow to the affected areas is one of the least expensive ways to minimize cellulite. "By fl ooding a particular area with oxygen-rich blood, you can instantly impact some cottage cheese-like pockets and depres- sions," says Cox, who has been known to physically demonstrate walking lunges and sumo squats for clients. "Exercise plays a front-and-center role in managing cellulite," acknowledges Repêchage founder Lydia Sarfati. "Toned muscles, along with balanced nutrition, translate to stronger connective tissue and leaner body mass," she says. "Going to the gym, or partaking in any activity that jump-starts or improves circulation, is crucial." That doesn't necessarily mean that the harder you ex- ercise, the quicker and more effectively the cellulite will dissipate. "Remember, it's more about stimulating blood fl ow than intensive sweating," says Sonia Boghosian, founder of Bio Jouvance. "If clients don't want to go to the gym, work with them. Even walking for 15 minutes a day will help; they just have to trigger that circulation on a regular, ideally daily, basis." After every in-spa cellulite treatment, you may want to remind clients to go for a walk or bike ride, or hit the gym. "This is crucial throughout the treatment series," says Dr. Christian Jurist, medical director of global edu- cation for Pevonia. He also advises spa pros to network with local wellness professionals such as personal train- ers and nutritionists to foster referral partnerships. "An effective cellulite program includes so much client edu- cation," Jurist stresses, "partially because the condition is often symptomatic of bigger health issues." THE STRAIGHT DOPE Pevonia's Jurist has a key piece of advice for spa pros to share with clients battling cellulite, and that's to be wary of these natural enemies to the skin: • Alcohol • Constipation • Dehydration • Excess sugar • Fatty, processed foods and food additives • Nicotine • Stress • Yo-yo dieting and its resulting weight fl uctuation patterns "Remind clients that if they're not properly eliminating their body's waste, that waste is stored in the colon and carried into connective tis- sues," Jurist says. "A healthy lymph system plays a very important role in the elimination of such waste." To this end, Cox typically teaches clients self-massage techniques to help break down toxins in cellulitic areas. "It's something they can do, daily, in the privacy of their own home, and that costs very little," she says. "I just recommend they use a little body lotion." Cox also coaches clients on the importance of dietary vigilance and a few key tweaks. "By making some small changes, guests really can help control their own cel- lulite," she says. For instance, she challenges concerned clients to consume a total of no more than six teaspoons of sugar each day, and to avoid foods containing more than 200 milligrams of sodium. Limiting salt consump- tion cuts down on fl uid retention, a phenomenon that only intensifi es cellulite's appearance. "I also have them sprinkle fl axseed on their breakfasts and salads," Cox adds. "This supports estrogen and boosts collagen levels, both of which help to keep cellulite in check." Lunges are one exercise move that might make a signifi cant dent in stubborn cellulite. Sugar does not have a sweet effect on hips and thighs. T a r g e t i n g C e l l u l i t e P t 3 . i n d d 6 4 Targeting Cellulite Pt3.indd 64 5 / 1 / 1 4 3 : 3 3 P M 5/1/14 3:33 PM
