42 DAYSPA | JULY 2014 Unravel the confusion and doubt surrounding this phenomenon—and get to the bottom of what it really means to detox. By Katie O'Reilly Defi ned generically as "the cleaning or removal of toxic substances from a living organism", detoxifi cation (or "detox") is one of the spa industry's trickier nuts to crack. Although the health benefi ts of massage and the logic surrounding esthetics are widely accepted, skeptics still dismiss spas' approaches to detox—herbal, electrical and electromagnetic—as a passing fad. Many wellness gurus, meanwhile, point out that detoxifi cation's origins trace back thousands of years, and that in a world increasingly tainted by environmental pollutants, electromagnetic energy, and food additives and preservatives, the value of detox is only growing. But what exactly is a detox? Is it that juice- and-cayenne-pepper diet that that D-list celebrity swears by? Is it yogis' secret to staying so mellow and ethereal-looking? And what can detoxing actually do for clients? DAYSPA took these questions and more to veteran spa pros across the country to unclog some common misconceptions surrounding the subject.
