Each in- volves different versions, so there are literally hundreds of possible movements that fl ow one into the next, thus engaging the body in near-constant motion. Although one can regard these practices as simple physical exercises, it is the individual's concentration ac- companying the movement that makes them transfor- mative. Qigong, in particular, uses small movements, sometimes held for a period of time, so as to balance shen (mind, soul and spirit), jing (body fl uids and ex- tracts such as blood and sweat) and qi. "In tai chi and qigong, you don't separate the mind, body and spirit," explains Tracy Whynot, co-owner of Place 360 Health + Spa (place360healthspa.com) in Del Mar, California, and DAYSPA advisory board member. "You apply your focus and challenge your mind; you fi nd that you can be relaxed and move at the same time, which is not the way of Western thinking." Deborah Adams, owner of The Wellness Spa in Stevens Point, Wisconsin (wellnesssparesort.com), is so committed to bringing tai chi and wellness to those around her that she has earned the moniker Qi Goddess. "I've worked with a lot of cancer survivors whose doctors say to them, 'Whatever it is you're do- ing, keep doing it.'" It's true that the effects of tai IN PRACTICE & IN LIFE Master teacher T. T. Liang (1900 – 2002) taught that the following tai chi concepts should be practiced in all aspects of life: • Relax. • Sink. • Concentrate your line of vision. • Hold the chest in, straighten the back, lower the shoulders and elbows. • Keep the head upright and the lowest vertebrae erect. • Clearly discriminate the substantial and the insubstantial. • Direct all the movement by the mind instead of by external muscular force. • Be tranquil when you move. Be in motion when tranquil. • Immediately follow up with down and down with up.
