FOOD FOR THOUGHT Even if offering nutrition-related products and services fi ts into your spa's philosophy, that doesn't nec- essarily make it benefi cial for your spa business. First, make sure you're clear about the reasons why you want to add the program. Ask your- self how broad you'd want your program to be, how it would blend with your current offerings and whether you would need to hire more staff to run it. Start small then gradually build as you go. "It can be a big challenge to start a nutritional program," acknowl- edges Hollis Barclay, co-owner of Hibiscus Day Spa in Brooklyn, New York, who launched her integra- tive wellness program, which in- cludes nutrition, last year. She is now looking to expand it. "People are naturally resistant to change, so you need to be able to show them, through education, the benefi ts of a healthy lifestyle," Barclay notes. Kahn's wellness program at Beau- ty Kliniek includes colon hydrother- apy, lymphatic therapy, naturopathic consulting and an integrative health coach. "Many of my clients have very challenging situations, are depressed and have almost given up," says Kahn. "I'm a lymphedema therapist and specialize in infl ammatory dis- orders such as lipedema [a chronic condition that affects fatty tissue dis- tribution] and Dercum's [a rare and painful disease characterized by fatty swellings accompanied by chronic pain and fatigue]. There's weight gain with these disorders, but the cli- ents who follow the program I've de- veloped lose weight, increase mobil- ity and experience elevated moods."
