44 DAYSPA | MAY 2015 "We want to partner with them, not just have them make their own hours and be separate from the rest of us," explains Baker. "One enticement we offer is a dental insurance plan." Mandy Ludwig applied for a job as a nail technician at Two Rivers seven years ago. She chose the facility because "I always wanted to work at the top spa and salon in the Valley—and Two Rivers is by far the top in the state of Idaho." She has been employed there ever since. In addition to the extensive training, Ludwig ap- preciates the spa's friendly and supportive atmosphere which, she says, makes working more fun. She praises Baker for his close involvement with staff and his efforts to ensure that everyone is happy. STEADY DIRECTION What's on deck for Two Rivers Salon & Spa? Baker's fi rst order of business is to maintain a regular buzz about the facility. He makes sure his place has a fi rm and active presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram almost daily to let consumers know about deals and treatments. "We are very committed to social media," he acknowledges. The owner has also found 30-second TV ads to be a good medium for his business. But standing still isn't Two Rivers' style, and as long as revenue continues to grow, Baker isn't afraid to grow along with it—it's just a matter of determining when and how to enlarge the space. So far, he has been prudent, and despite enjoying on average 6% growth each year, he reports it's likely that he'll add square footage in the next 18 months. Anything less would be like trying to stop a river. Heather Larson is a freelance spa, travel and business writer based in Tacoma, Washington.
