"In TCM, sage root belongs to the category of herbs that in- vigorate blood and remove stagnation," he explains. "It's considered bitter, slightly cold." The bitter com- ponent, he says, aids the digestive system and gives it a role in easing gastrointestinal conditions. The German scientifi c advisory board Commission E, often referred to for its analysis of herbs, approves internal use of sage for gastrointestinal upset and excessive sweating, as well as for external use for conditions of the mouth and throat. Sage might be especially helpful for women, Rosen reports. "It can be ingested as a tea to relieve excessive menstrual bleeding, congestion and infl ammation— heat—from the blood," he says, "and menopausal symptoms such as night sweats and hot fl ashes." And a 2013 study at the Research Institute of Me- dicinal Plants in Iran found that subjects with type 2 HERBAL WISDOM The Greeks relied on sage for topical care, to halt bleeding and to cleanse ulcers and wounds. Historically it was used, and still is today, as a gargle for colds, coughs, hoarseness, sore throats, mouth and throat infl ammation, and mouth sores. Ellen Kamhi, PhD, RN, AHG (American Herbalist Guild), AHN-BC (Advanced Holistic Nurse, Board Certifi ed), author and medical school instructor (naturalnurse.com), adds that it can be effective to address halitosis, laryngitis, tonsillitis avnd gingivitis. Sage is rich in folklore. In some ancient cultures, healthy sage growth was associated with a long life, and eating the herb was said to ward off evil. The Egyptians believed sage to be a fertility drug. It has also been used for centuries as a sacred ceremonial herb, most notably in Native American tribes. "Turkish women once even used it as a natural hair dye for gray hair," notes Kamhi. dayspamagazine.com/freeinfo • Use FreeInfo #37 © GETTY IMAGES meets The Choice of Makeup Artists & the Most Discerning Beauty Professionals Whether backstage, on the runway, or in real life, Tweezerman Professional is your go to brand for unmatched quality, precision & performance.
