Tuscan Sun changes its protocols annually, so each department's lead service pro- vider is charged with training her team at least two months ahead of time. Employees are reminded to explain to any new guests exactly what the experience will entail, and to never let them feel rushed at the end of the service. Of course, the staff also needs to know how to keep smitten couples from com- pletely losing track of time! So, what happens if an amorous couple lingers just a little too long in their private suite? A lot comes down to therapists' semantics. "We train ours to say, 'Take your time getting dressed; I'll just be stand- ing outside your door with a glass of water,'" shares Lamar. "When clients book services, we also make a point of emphasizing that they'll start and end exactly on time." The Peninsula Spa circumvents the tricky issue by offering deluxe pack- ages that give clients the choice to pay for extra suite time. The Private Retreat ($1,475), for instance, in- cludes either three hours of services or two hours of treatments plus one hour of "private relaxation time." Those last 60 minutes, explains Fer- nandez, involve a bath drawn for two, a private steam shower, cham- pagne and scrumptious spa cuisine. RETAIL FROM THE HEART Another lovable bonus about Val- entine's Day spa services is that they tend to get guests in the mood to treat each other to take-home gifts. "I don't like to do a hard sell during the experience itself, but we make a point to set out luxurious little prod- ucts at checkout," says Lamar. Smith loves to pair "gifty" items via gift card promotions. "We nor- mally use the occasion to highlight those yummy products that allow clients to extend the spa experi- ence at home, such as our custom- brand lip butters, scrubs and body creams," she explains. Throughout February, the Pen- insula's Fernandez showcases a selection of body oils, bath salts, room diffusers, robes and slippers in the spa's retail area. Tuscan Sun's Satterfi eld always offers a gift with the purchase of a Valentine's Day gift card. "Last year we gave away a body puff with soap," she recalls, "and another time we partnered with a local fl orist to offer roses."
