D AYSPA debuted in 1996 to meet the need for a business magazine in the burgeoning spa arena. Twenty years later, we're still going strong. Mind you, we're spring chickens compared with the industry itself: Think "original spa day" and your brain might conjure an image of Cleopatra luxuriating in her bath of donkey milk circa 40 B.C. However, thousands of years before that, ayurvedic practices were being espoused in India, Traditional Chinese Medicine was gaining ground in Asia and on the other side of the world, the Mayans were partaking in early detox sessions in rustic sweat lodges. In other words, spa was a global phenomenon back then, just as it is today. Spa has always been an evolving phenomenon too, something we were reminded of as we fl ipped through past copies of DAYSPA while preparing this landmark issue (look out for the anniversary logo on dedicated sections, from Looking Back: DAYSPA Celebrates 20 Years on page 30 to A Time to Refl ect on page 50). More outlandish trends may have come and gone— bird poop facial, anyone?—but others, such as the explosion of technology and wellness, have endured and evolved in response to the changes in the world around us. As switched-on business owners, you've had to adapt to these changes as well. You realize that even though the industry is growing—with everything from the number of spa visits to overall spa revenue increasing between 2014 and 2015—competition for a slice of the pie is fi ercer than ever. So, whether you've incorporated the latest software booking system into your daily operations or launched workplace wellness regimens to get a jump on your employees' stress levels, you've taken the advice offered in our pages and run with it. As DAYSPA enters the next phase of its existence, we hope you'll continue on the journey with us. We'll keep bringing you success stories, offering practical tips and advice, and we won't shy away from important topics that may get your goat. With this continuation comes a redesign, so don't miss next month's issue, when we reveal our gorgeous new look!
