For an entire month, I concentrate on what matters most, from peeling myself away from Facebook at 9 p.m. each night to donating cat and dog treats to my local shelter. Make no mistake: I adore the holidays and always have, but the older I am, the briefer my Christmas wish list. I really don't need another pair of shoes or fancy handbag (although, as an expat Brit, I really do need some luxury mince pies and a tin of Quality Street!). What I truly desire each year is continued health and wellness, along with deeper, more meaningful interactions. Apparently I'm not alone: Figures just released by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) reveal that the global wellness industry continues to boom. Between 2013 and 2015, the international wellness sector registered double-digit growth and now represents 5.1% of the world's economic output. "The 'wellness economy' just keeps rising, with an upward trajectory that seems unstoppable," said Ophelia Yeung, senior research fellow at the GWI. "We predict big wellness spending because of these megatrends: an emerging global middle class, a rapidly aging world population, a chronic disease and stress epidemic, the failure of the 'sick-care' medical model (resulting in uncontrollable healthcare costs) and a growing subset of consumers seeking experiences rooted in meaning, purpose, authenticity and nature."
