[ 10 ] • DAYSPA • december 2016 The Gift of Giving Back Laura attended a VI Aesthetics launch at L.A.'s iconic Chateau Marmont Rachel went to the opening of Burke Williams Hollywood M O R E O N T H E W E B T E A M T R A V E L S I enjoyed a BABOR facial at the legendary Hotel Bel Air from the editor by Lesley McCave hereas November is all about giving thanks, for me, December is all about giving back—to myself, to my family and to my neighborhood. For an entire month, I concentrate on what matters most, from peeling myself away from Facebook at 9 p.m. each night to donating cat and dog treats to my local shelter. Make no mistake: I adore the holidays and always have, but the older I am, the briefer my Christmas wish list. I really don't need another pair of shoes or fancy handbag (although, as an expat Brit, I really do need some luxury mince pies and a tin of Quality Street!). What I truly desire each year is continued health and wellness, along with deeper, more meaningful interactions. Apparently I'm not alone: Figures just released by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) reveal that the global wellness industry continues to boom. Between 2013 and 2015, the international wellness sector registered double-digit growth and now represents 5.1% of the world's economic output. "The 'wellness economy' just keeps rising, with an upward trajectory that seems unstoppable," said Ophelia Yeung, senior research fellow at the GWI. "We predict big wellness spending because of these megatrends: an emerging global middle class, a rapidly aging world population, a chronic disease and stress epidemic, the failure of the 'sick-care' medical model (resulting in uncontrollable healthcare costs) and a growing subset of consumers seeking experiences rooted in meaning, purpose, authenticity and nature." (For the full report, go to dayspamagazine.com.) So with these fi ndings in mind, perhaps it's time for you to seek new ways to drill down to what matters: serving the wellness requirements of your guests. Keen to "green up" your design? Flip to "Eco Chic Spa Speak" on page 46. Aiming to recapture the soothing vibe of your faded relaxation area? "Room to Relax" on page 22 off ers plenty of inspiration. Determined to raise money for a cause that's been keeping you awake at night? See our Winning Ways column on page 62. Whatever your seasonal vacation/staycation plans, we hope it's the most magical time of the year for you and your signifi cant others, from partners and pets to clients and community. Cheers!
