[ 12 ] • # dayspamagazine • september 2017 Brushing Up Beautifully T E A M T R A V E L S from the editor by Lesley McCave s I write this, at the end of July, it's National Lipstick Day—24 hours during which people across the planet are encouraged to layer on the lippie and snap a selfi e. Social media feeds are full of pretty pouts and mega mouths, and the hashtag # nationallipstickday has been used more than 211,000 times on Instagram alone. It's no surprise that social media is the perfect forum to satisfy consumers' desire for instant gratifi cation and constant feedback. We live in a world of increasingly short attention spans, where visual appeal is everything. Throw in a celebrity collaboration and the excitement reaches a fever pitch. Case in point: the recent limited-edition Jaclyn Hill x Morphe eyeshadow palette, which sold out in under an hour. Seemingly, consumers' demand for makeup shows no signs of slowing down. But don't just take our word for it: According to a report by market research company The NPD Group released earlier this year, the U.S. prestige—aka high-end—beauty industry rose by 6 percent in 2016 to reach $17 billion, with makeup experiencing the greatest sales growth (12 percent), contributing 82 percent of the industry's total gains. So if you're tempted to dismiss National Lipstick Day as a gimmick, why not see it as a business opportunity instead? By providing a range of the latest makeup services and products, and creating colorful—and profi table—social media tie-ins, you're sure to reach new customers. For inspiration, fl ip to our gorgeous "Fall Faces" feature (page 28) to learn how to tailor the latest trends to clients, from the more conservative to the most adventurous. And speaking of learning, this issue has plenty more educational content. Our second feature, "Back to School" (page 58), presents a rundown of the rewards of continuing education; Plugged In (page 72) off ers an SEO refresher; and Spotlight (page 24) zeroes in on imaginative menu enhancements that can boost service tickets signifi cantly, but at little cost to you. Because when you stop learning, you stop growing, as a wise person once said.
